Change of Program

Koleksiyon Tarabya Contract & Office Interior Renovation
2010

Employer: Koleksiyon

Design: Koleksiyon - Can Taşkent

Application: Koleksiyon

While the building was originally an abandoned crane factory, it was renovated as a furniture store of the Collection in 1994. In 2000, it was subjected to a comprehensive static strengthening study against earthquakes.

In 2009, the management decided to reorganize the building, which had served in the field of "home furniture" until this date, as a "contract business and office" store. We proposed a new program that envisioned the building not only being a store but also a space that would gather architects, industrial designers, engineers, managers, salespeople and customers under the same roof.

This would create an opportunity for our guests to see that we work with the furniture we design and represent. On the other hand, it would give us designers the chance to connect directly with users, get feedback from sales staff, and keep our knowledge up to date on new product arrivals.

First intervention: volumetric:

In some cases, space design is more about what is “eliminated” and “avoided” than what is “built” and “added”.

We got rid of the existing dividing walls and platforms of different heights, thus obtaining transparent and flexible spaces. By eliminating a rarely used staircase, we have created more exhibition space and a greater visual connection to the outdoors. The service elevator was integrated into the space and made available for visitors. We also arranged the entrance and toilets to be accessible to everyone.

Second intervention: materials:

The floor used to be a combination of different materials: parquet, MDF, concrete, steel, stone and carpet! We covered the entire ground floor with hardened concrete and the other floors with laminate flooring, thus simplifying the space visually. The steel columns and railings were originally white, and we painted them dark gray to make them remain perceptually in the background.

We did not try to recreate clients' own office spaces here. Instead, we aimed to present the furniture in an almost “supernatural” context, thus giving them the opportunity to establish a direct relationship by isolating the products from the space.

By using concrete panels instead of a plain -white- background, we created an industrial, raw (unfinished) background that contrasts with the fine details of the furniture.

Third intervention: settlement:

Flexible spaces allow designers, managers and products to be easily relocated according to organizational innovations.", At the entrance, next to a giant library with rich content, there is a traditional but contemporary seating group for activities such as small business meetings, waiting, chatting and reading.

Specially designed furniture such as void storage units and high-backed sofas ensure the privacy of the staff working on the upper floors as well as their relationship with the store. On the top floor, there is a conference area surrounded by movable textile curtains, capable of meeting changing needs, and a cafeteria where the products of our own garden are offered.

Equipped with heavy-duty cable trays and seriously energy-saving LED spotlights, every part of the space can be used as a display area for works of art and projects as well as contemporary design furniture.
