When you first heard about transformation, what did you think about the product?

As a first reflex, we asked ourselves: “In what cases is an industrial product subject to refunctioning?” In summary, we made the following conclusions:

It must have lost its original function, must have been "retired due to disability", and its repair must not be economically rational.

Although it fulfills its original function, this function is not needed / must have been overproduced

The colander strainer, which was the subject of the project, was not in a condition that required refunctioning as it was delivered to us. However, we made sure that the design we were working on was also valid for a product in this situation.

Do you work on transformation in your professional life?

We try to choose recycled raw materials as much as possible in our architectural, interior design and furniture application works.

Have you designed a product like this before?

We design and produce a certain line of furniture and lighting products on behalf of our own brand "Konkret".

Why did you set out to design this product?

Thanks to its form and dimensions, the colander seemed like a candidate to become the body of a small coffee table with a little intervention. We brought together this simple, plain industrial product with plywood, which is also a raw, industrial material. In this way, we achieved a harmonious “contrast” between the “adds” and the “added”.

Could you tell us a little about the product in terms of function and design?

The product's perforated/light-permeable surface also allowed it to be used as a lighting tool. We evaluated this opportunity, but we preferred to preserve this genetic feature of the colander strainer, which is essentially a "portable" and a "hand tool", in its new function.

The newly designed coffee table can be easily carried by holding the handle of the colander, and can be used anywhere, regardless of the cable, thanks to a rechargeable lighting system. The color of the light - and therefore the surface of the colander - can be changed with a remote control.

Although we added a technological content to the product, we took care not to let this overshadow the brutalist character of the coffee table.
