"Bringing" The Balance

B&T's Manifestal Structures

Can Taşkent looks at the "Life in Balance" concept, which B&T launched at Orgatec in 2022, from the creative production perspective and comments on the role of balance in the space setup of B&T House.

B&T introduced its new manifesto at the Orgatec fair last year: Life in Balance (can be translated as balanced or balanced life).

Balance is a state of determination in the scientific sense, while B&T sees it as a journey.

A journey of discovery. A creative journey.

The brand invites everyone to use different forms, materials and colors in their space designs, thus creating unique mixtures.

A series of very impressive sculptures were designed to communicate this manifesto. We undertook the task of constructing some of these sculptures to be exhibited in the store.

In my opinion, the title “Life in Balance” can also be read as “life brought into balance” when it also includes the concept of a “journey” as B&T suggests.

The universe has a magnificent order and balance established at every scale, from the atomic level to the solar systems.

All living things intervene in this order in some way in order to survive.

The interventions of living beings other than us are for the purpose of survival and reproduction. It is instinctive

We make these interventions not only to survive, but also to live a better quality of life.

For generations, people have learned through trial and error and chance, gained experience, and passed on what they have learned to others.

We call these interventions, which come from tradition and are developed by adding innovation, as "design activities" with today's modern perspective.

Such a "designed", in other words "created" state of balance can be observed among the simple geometric forms that make up B&T's sculptures.

There is a concept called "entropy" in science. Accordingly, the molecular structure always tends to move into a state of "minimum energy" and "maximum disorder". Therefore, all beings, living things, and even social relations in the universe have this tendency.

When water falls to the earth, it flows until it gets rid of the energy on it and reaches lakes and seas. That's why they say "water flows and finds its way". In order to benefit from this energy, we draw a dam in front of the water, in a sense, we "create" the balance we want.

Likewise, if we left the geometric forms that make up the sculptures alone, they would not look the way we wanted. They want to get rid of the potential energy caused by their altitude, to fall, break, and break into pieces. In the long run, they begin to fade and rot. Thus, they find their natural balance.

We made a construction inside each of them so that they can stand together without falling over. We applied paint and polish to preserve their appearance for a long time.

Thus, we tried to "achieve" the balance we wanted.

Achieving" balance, whether chemical or physical, spiritual, social, economic or artistic, is achieved by equalizing mutual forces.

The only way to do this is not to pit "equal" entities against each other; balance can also be achieved by "equivalent" entities.

For example, in physics, moment force is measured as the product of mass and distance. Therefore, a mass close to the center can be balanced by a smaller mass away from the center.

In artistic works, opposing concepts such as presence and absence, fullness and emptiness, light and shadow, ornament and simplicity, even order and disorder balance each other.

A piece of furniture, a sculpture, a building can be brought into balance by many different methods.

In this way, diversity, innovation and creativity are created in design activities.

Throughout history, it has been observed that the human brain finds peace not through "absolute" values, but through the balance established between them. The world of architecture, art and design has always sought this balance.

B&T invites everyone to embark on such an experimental journey and seek their own inner balance.
